Overview
The Junior League of Birmingham’s upcoming Kids in the Kitchen Junior Chef Competition will engage children in food growing, cultivation and preparation. The program aims to make cooking with healthy food fun and accessible while increasing community partnerships with local chefs, farmers and stores.
Community partners
- Little Green Gardeners
- YMCA
- Girls on the Run of Greater Detroit
- Kenbrook, Upton and Oakridge Elementary Schools
How it works
Teams of students from the community will work with local chefs to develop kid-friendly and kid-approved recipes specifically for meals that could be prepared for school lunches. The winning recipes will be incorporated into the schools’ lunch menus, increasing Oakridge, Kenbrook and Upton Elementary students’ access to healthy lunches and the community’s awareness of sourcing local food.
What’s the impact?
The program is expected to reach 500 families in addition to the 25 children who will attend the “Cook-Off” events.
