Overview
The Junior League of Huntsville’s Apple Annie initiative aims to combat childhood obesity in the Madison County area by providing interactive, hands-on activities and programming that educate children about healthy eating habits, while exposing them to positive lifestyle choices. The ultimate goal of the initiative is to empower children to make responsible lifestyle choices throughout their lives and to combat the growth of childhood obesity and the related health issues.

How it works
Over the past five years, JLH volunteers have delivered more than 30,000 apples to students in each of the public elementary schools in the three school districts (Huntsville City, Madison City and Madison County) located within the Madison County area. Additionally, JLH has provided educational programming related to nutrition, healthy eating choices, and the importance of physical activity. The programming provides a platform for further discussion by the teachers regarding health, nutrition and exercise, in addition to providing resources and tools for the children to engage their families in the discussion.
What’s the impact?
JLH’s mission is to provide the children with the tools they need to help their families make healthy choices and reverse the trend of childhood obesity and its associated health risks. JLH strives to spread the message that healthy eating and nutrition can be fun and can start at a young age.
